Scooter Training by Brayden & Max

Some children that ride scooters to school got to do a fun scooter training session with Constable Harwood. At the scooter training, we got to ride our scooters and it was very fun because we got to do a big ride around Hillcrest. All of us went down the big Hillcrest hill next to the preschool. Going down the hills, we didn’t really want to use our brakes but we had to because Constable Harwood said we had to, so we ruined our wheels. We had to ride in a line and everyone was pushing in. We crossed heaps of roads and we all had a great time and learnt some new skills.

School TRYathlon by Ruby & Kaia

Today was the day of the Sunnybrae Normal School TRYathlon! Miss Rodger slammed the clapper and the Year six boys took off swimming. All you could see was white water splashing as they JUMPED out of the water and ran to their bikes. They all hopped onto their bikes and sped off around the track. After they had finished biking, they dropped their bikes and started running as fast as they could. Everyone was cheering as Nati ran across the finish line in first place! It was then time for the Year 6 girls individual races. We jumped up and ran to the pool. “3,2,1 GO!” Miss Rodger shouted. Ruby shot down the pool, everyone else not far behind, a few minutes later we were all out of the pool heading for the bikes. Everyone attempted to get straight onto their bikes but soon slipped off, which made it a struggle to get back on. As the Year 6 girls were on the last stretch, everyone felt like collapsing and our legs were turning to jelly. It was our first lap of running and we were all starting to slow down - some children even started to walk but we carried on. It was the last lap as Ruby crossed the finish line placing 1st with Kaia a close 2nd. After that, it was time for the Year 5 boys to do their race as Miss Rodger signalled the race was starting, they took off down the pool with Harira in the lead. As the boys hopped out of the pool and ran to their bikes, they jumped on their bikes and went around the field. Soon they were jumping off their bikes and heading for the running laps. As Harira crossed the finish line and won, the Year 5 girls started their race in the pool they all raced until the running was finished. Annabel Barlow had won the Year 5 girl individuals. Everyone cheered as the Year 4 boys got up and walked to the pool, looking a bit frightened...After the Year 4 individual races, there were the team races and the Year 3 races. WOW, what an awesome day! We can’t wait until next year, we hope that we get to do a TRYathlon at intermediate school.

Massey Uni Students

We had three students from Massey University come into our classroom to teach some mini-lessons to us. We solved some maths problem-solving questions and wrote some fabulous poems! These will be shared on here soon.

Making Kūmara Chips!

Some of our class reading groups have been reading a text about making kūmara chips. This is related to our overall inquiry topic about different types of foods from different cultures. We have been finding fun facts about kūmara and how they came to NZ. We have been asking our teacher all week if we can make some of our own kūmara chips, so we were really happy when she came to school today with all of the ingredients. Here are some pictures of us - don't we look like we are having fun? Next week, we will sequence the pictures into the correct order and write a set of instructions for how we made our kūmara chips - they were delicious!

e-learning

We have a breakout room off our classroom - we are allowed to use the computers and laptops in this room as a learning tool. We can log onto our Reading Eggs or Mathletics accounts, check our e-mails, present our work on Google Docs, check out online reading pages such as Kiwikids News and lots more!
